Music camps and similar programs are designed to work alongside the instruction your child receives during their lessons, and build upon what he or she has already learned. In order to determine which type of summer music camp is right for your child, it’s important to understand the types of camps that are out there and do a little research on each one prior to applying. Below, you’ll find a brief description of a few of the types of camps you might consider for your child.
The School of Rock
If you have a child who would like to start learning how to play an instrument, or has only had a few lessons, a camp for beginners is a great option. With locations all across the country, The School of Rock holds sessions for younger children or new musicians each summer. Their focus is on teaching vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards. If your child has been playing music for a while, there are other summer music camps he or she can participate in at The School of Rock. Interlochen Summer Music Program
Interlochen Arts Camp offers excellent summer music camps. Located in Interlochen, Michigan, their programs appeal to kids of all ages and skill levels. Their program hires excellent teachers and is comprised of many different orchestras and ensembles. Students receive individual lessons and also have the opportunity to explore other arts activities, such as dancing and singing. Interlochen has programs for students as young as third grade all the way up through high school. The cost for attending the Interlochen Summer Music Program varies, depending on your child’s age, number of sessions, and type of musical instrument. Scholarships and financial aid are available.
The New York Summer Music Festival
Held each summer in Oneonta, New York, and hosted by the Music Department of the State of New York, NYSMF is a camp that is focused on students who have shown promise in their lessons and wish to enhance their talents, perhaps even professionally. Music students of all different ability levels from the ages of 11 to 25 are encouraged to apply. This is an excellent choice if you find that your child is serious about pursuing a career as a musician. With as many as 50 daily classes and ensembles, and more than 200 students per session, NYSMF is an excellent choice for the serious musician. Students can apply online, and a teacher recommendation is required. Scholarships are available and students can also obtain college credits through the program.
